Gameplay

Overwatch in most game modes is played in two teams of six. The player plays as one of 30 “heroes” (heroes), each with their own characteristics and advantages and disadvantages. Heroes can be switched during a match if the player is dead. The different playable maps are based on real locations such as Egypt, London and Japan. The players work together, for example, to defend or take over a certain point in a certain time.

The different groups of heroes each have their own function in the game. Damage heroes are for example suitable to do a lot of damage. Tank heroes have the most life points and are most effective when they defend their team. Usually they also have a shield. Support heroes should support their team by giving them more life points. In order to perform optimally, most players choose a combination of the three groups of heroes. In the game the players can kill each other to prevent the point from being taken over or to take it over. In that case, the players have to wait a few seconds until they return to the game. The players can also change heroes when they are dead.

Each hero has a number of skills that they can perform. Usually there is a short time between them before they can use that skill again. Each hero also slowly builds up a special skill during the game; this is called the “ultimate”. If the meter for that skill is full, the player can use it at any time. If a player uses an “ultimate” there is a short warning for the opponents in the form of a catchphrase of the hero. This gives the hostile players a short time to take out the player or to take cover.

In competitive mode the players are put against each other in a competition. This game mode is often taken more seriously by the players, because there is a “skill rating” attached to it. This rating determines how well a player has performed. If a player loses in the game mode, the skill rating will be lower and vice versa. After their first ten games in competitive, players can see which of the following levels they have reached: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, or Grandmaster.

Overwatch eSports

Overwatch has a well-defined path to pro and starts at the Overwatch Open Division. Players of any skill level can participate in this division by choosing to play in Korea, China, Australia, South America, North America, Europe, or the pacific region and face other top-ranked players and teams in your region in a structured format. At the close of each season the top four Open Division teams from each region will be invited to compete in that region’s Contenders Trials, an eight-team promotion-relegation tournament for Overwatch Contenders.

Joining Overwatch Contenders is a major milestone for any aspiring Overwatch pro player. In each of the seven regions, twelve teams will assemble up-and-coming rosters to compete across multiple seasons annually. Those who emerge victorious have an increased chance of being noticed by scouts for the Overwatch League.

The Overwatch League, the first major global esports league with city-based teams, is designed to celebrate only the best of the best. Though it currently comprises hand-picked champions, future competitors are likely to be selected by Overwatch League scouts from among talented Overwatch Contenders, ensuring the Overwatch League will be continually filled with proven athletes. With the stability of salaries and benefits, the best career Overwatch players in the world will clash year-round in pursuit of the Overwatch League Championship—and millions of dollars in bonuses!
