Dota 2 is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game developed by Valve Corporation. It is a continuation of the Warcraft III scenario Defense of the Ancients. A beta version was released on August 16, 2011, and the game itself was released worldwide on July 9, 2013. Dota 2 is only available through Steam.

Gameplay

Dota 2 is played in matches of two teams with five players each. Each team has its own base, ‘the Ancient’, in a corner of the playing field. The team in the lower left corner is called Radiant and the team in the upper right corner is called Dire. The game ends when one of the Ancients is destroyed. Each player controls one character, also called “Hero”, throughout the game. In total there are 116 Heroes available. During the match, players must collect gold and experience so that they can buy better items and reach a higher level. With these items and levels they can then try to eliminate enemy players.

The biggest tournament in the Dota 2 competition is called The International and is organized by Valve. This tournament takes place annually in KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. As of 2015, Valve also started smaller seasonal tournaments called The Majors. The first version of the Majors took place in Frankfurt, Germany, and the second in Shanghai, China. In 2017, The International was won in Seattle by the players of the Dutch Team Liquid. With a total prize pool of $24.8 million, the Dutch team went home with $10.8 million.
